 | Pot Culture: J Day Saturday 2 May 2009 - International day of protest |

International J Day is always the first Saturday in May, so this year that means Saturday 2nd May. NORML organised events in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, for people to come along and show their support for repealing cannabis prohibition.
We need your support now more than ever. This year the UN is reviewing it's anti-drug conventions and the signs are looking promising. Here in New Zealand the Law Commission, an independent non-political body charged with fixing broken laws, has turned it's attention to the Misuse of Drugs Act.
J Day is part of the Global Marijuana March, happening in over 200 cities around the world.

You can help. Come to J Day and show your support: All events run from High Noon to 4:20. J Day is free, but because of the nature of what we are trying to achieve, J Day is an R18 event. Please, no alcohol.
Auckland - Albert Park. This year we're doing two zones featuring Jafa Mafia, Morning Steppa, Sunday Puff, Killa Fire Burn, Jordan +MC, Dub Present, King G, Willie & Sol'omonics, Tommy Flowers and maybe even more. Plus food stalls, the Daktory Day Out, the CannaBus, the NORML BBQ, the Grower's Ironman, and more! UPDATE: J Day had to be officially canceled due to heavy rain, however you can't keep our kind away and more than 500 people still turned up despite the weather. We had to cancel the stalls and grower's ironman but Jafa Mafia kindly brought in their PA and heaps of DJs and MCs performed to entertain the weedy folk sheltering under the trees and in tents. It was an excellent day and great turn out, all things considered. A big thanks to everyone who came, who entertained, the bus crew, the Auckland City Council, and everyone who made it happen.
Hamilton - Lake Stage, by the watertower. MC'd by none other than the Trons finest lyrical masters 2Young and Moskon this years JDay is going large! With an amazing lineup including Sora Shima, Blinding Jupiter, Skelitor, Chris Thompson, Milk Train, Second Chapter, Electric Mayhem and The Hip Hop Fresh Funk Crew, heaps of stalls and a bouncy castle the best afternoon out in the Tron just got a whole lot better! UPDATE: also rained out but about 500 people still turned up to enjoy the festivities. It was still Hamiltron's best J Day ever!
Wellington - Frank Kitts Park UPDATE: this was Wellington's best J Day in many years, with hundreds of people enjoying a sunny day on the waterfront. Big thanks to all the DJs and entertainers and everyone who made it happen.
Christchurch - Latimer Square, in conjunction with the ALCP. UPDATE: more than 500 people braved a very chilly day to show their support for ending cannabis prohibition. There were several bands and plenty of speakers, plus information booths and banners and signs everywhere. A great day.
Dunedin - The Octagon. UPDATE: Dunedin J Day went off without a hitch. Awesome sunshine all day with about 350 people at the peak and about 500-600 total over the day. The local Sammy's entertainment venue
provided a bangin soundsystem and DJ's free of charge. Lots of weed smoked, a couple of speeches and no cops. A big success!
