Why do you use cookies? Are they unsafe? The new NORML website uses cookies extensively. You can still browse the entire website anonymously with cookies turned off, but some features (e.g. the MyNORML pages) may not work as intended if you disable cookies.
NORML believe that there is nothing wrong with cookies when they are issued by the website you are browsing - these first-party cookies are a valuable technology to add value to a website - they allow you to store your site preferences etc.
NORML believe that it is third-party cookies that are the problem - these are when cookies are secretly issued by a website that is not the one you are browsing - these are typically used by advertisers to track users habits on the web. Rest assured that NORML will never use third-party cookies.
NORML recommend that you set your browsers security preferences to block third-party cookies, but allow first-party cookies.
See www.cookiecentral.com for everything about cookies. [ Back to Top ]

What are those icons in the news stories beside links? The NORML website practices deep-linking to stories on other websites extensively. To indicate that you are leaving the NORML website and going to another organisations website we use icons beside the link:
A link to a story on the MAP website
A link to a story on the Green Party website
A link to a story on the Scoop website
A link to a story on the NORML website
NORML are happy to extend this to any website that:
- publishes worthwhile cannabis news stories or other documents
- makes deep-linking possible and has a commitment to keeping URLs permanently available
- supplies us with an easily identifiable icon to use (should be 18x18 pixels or similar).
Please email webmaster@norml.org.nz with details of any web pages you think we should link to, giving the id number or title and date of the NORML News story you think the link should be added to.
NORML will not normally link to news stories on sites that are likely to delete or change the URLs of pages, or sites that prevent or discourage deep-linking. Read a discussion of why Deep Linking is Good Linking.

What is the difference between the News stories and the Content pages?
Yes, we find it confusing too. The News articles are stories that have a date, and they will drop down the list of articles as new ones are added. The content pages are permanent important pages that have no date - these pages are updated with the latest information. Both the News articles and content pages are then sub-divided by topic (such as Medical Marijuana or Hemp).
If you go to a topic page, in the middle column you will see a menu box with all of the content pages in that topic. After that comes the top 10 news articles in that topic.
There is also a difference in the URL. Content pages have filenames such as page53.html while news articles have filenames such as article223.html

How can I post a comment to a news story?
If you have an opinion on a news story or something to add, please post a comment by clicking the Post Comment button at the bottom of the story.
Currently it is only possible to post comments about News stories, but this may be extended to other site content in the future.

Private Messages - What's the difference between Sentbox and Outbox?
The Outbox contains the private messages that you have sent to other users of the NORML website, but they have not yet logged in and read them. If you delete these messages they will not be received by the other user (so you have a chance to change your mind).
Once the other user has read your private message, it will be moved to your Sentbox. You can safely delete the private message now and it will not be deleted from the other user's Inbox.

How can I advertise on the NORML site?Currently NORML accept top of page banner adverts. These cost NZ$10 per 10000 page impressions (views) per advert. At current page view rates this will mean your advert is visible for many months before you would have to renew it. Currently we have fairly good click through rates (CTR) of around 1 to 2% of page views (although falls off dramatically when an advert has been around for months).
There is also the option of "multipliers". You specify 2x, 3x etc, and it means that more users of the website will see your advert in a quicker time period, and your purchased impressions will run out faster.
We may also exchange banner adverts with friendly websites. Contact us if you think you are a deserving cause.
Please email your 468 by 60 pixels banner advert to webmaster@norml.org.nz. Paying advertisers will get a login and password so that they can check the page impression and click totals and CTR for each advert. [ Back to Top ]

Is there a remember me option for login?Yes, there is an option where you will automatically be logged into the NORML website without having to type your login and password. This can only be done if you use the login box at the bottom of the Forum.

If you check this box and log in, a permanent cookie will be stored on your computer's hard drive. You should not use this option on a shared computer, e.g. a cybercafe or college computer lab, because anyone who uses the same computer will be able to access your account. [ Back to Top ]
