PostDOWNLOAD AND SIGN NORML'S MEDICAL MARIJUANA PETITION!    Posted: Wed Feb 14, 2007 2:37 pm Reply with quote

from here:

http://www.norml.org.nz/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=17

or http://www.norml.org.nz/article607.html

or click on the "resources" link at the top center of this page.

Collect as many signatures as possible, then send your completed petitions either to NORML, PO Box 3307, Auckland, or directly to the Health Select Committee, Freepost, Parliament, Wellington.

Include a short cover letter explaining that the signatures collected are in support of NORML's medicinal cannabis petition which they are already considering. It's even more helpful to send a photocopy of the petition to your local MP so they know there is plenty of support in their electorate.

There is plenty of support out there so gathering signatures isn't hard. TV3's poll found 63% of Kiwis support medical use. An online poll this week found 74%. One shop we have the petition in collected 700 signatures in a couple of weeks. Billy McKee collected 200 in one day! He's also offering a mystery prize for the activist who beats him and collects the most signatures.

Note: the petition is in rich text format which any computer can open. If it doesn't format properly, click on File > Page Setup and adjust your page margins so it fits on one page.

Chris,

This is a continuance of the original petition and building on that I gather ..

I trust this is trying to gather numbers without a specific target , but more to display public opinion .Or is there an event coming up the petition will be supporting?

Good question, I'll find out. I'm not sure because NORML made their submission to the Health Select Committee last week. They got the hearing based on the petition being presented a couple of months ago.

I think the rules is one petition on a particular topic per parliamentary term. Thats the reason Neville Yates' rather large petition hasn't gone in yet. Will get back to you because I don't think there's any harm in continuing it so theres something to present it to the next government and perhaps get another hearing.

Collecting signatures on this petition is finished.

Now, the best thing people can do, and this would actually be very useful, is to write to Sue Kedgley, chair of the Health Select Committee, and express your support for the petition.

Anyone can do this. Just say you heard about it in the media, or on a website or whatever, and say you support the intention of the petition. You can go into more detail if you wish.

email sue.kedgley@parliament.govt.nz (make sure you say "To the chair of the health committee" otherwise you're writing to her as an MP)

or write to: the Health Select Committee, Parliament Buildings, Wellington

do it now!

Chris

I sent one this morning and just got this :

Quote:

You have sent the attached message to the Chairperson of the Health Committee. If this message was intended for the whole committee and is tabled at a meeting your name and address details become publicly available when the committee reports to the House on the Fowlie petition. Would you please advise me if you intended this to happen - or do you want your message to remain a personal communication with the Chairperson.
Graham Hill
Clerk of the Committee
Health Committee

My understanding is that if it isn't tabled then its a bit of a waste of time, a private message doesn't count much. If I'm wrong Chris can put me right if he's still reading the forums.

So anyone else sending a note to the committee should only put their name and perhaps town or area - not their address and phone on it - if they're a bit shy.
